Press Release: Watershed Management Group and Coca-Cola Turn Waste into Water Savings
Watershed Management Group and Coca-Cola Enterprises have partnered to turn Coke’s empty soda syrup drums into rainwater harvesting cisterns, with assistance from the United Way of Southern Arizona, Tucson Clean and Beautiful, and PRO-Neighborhoods. The barrels will feature artwork by local troops from the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council and the Catalina Council Boy Scouts of America. These 55 gallon barrels come with a filter to keep out debris and mosquitoes, and have a hose bib.
The event will take place on Saturday, March 13th at 2:30pm at the Ward III City Council Office, located at 1510 East Grant Road. 80 barrels will be distributed. 50 have been reserved for WMG Co-op members. WMG’s Co-op members volunteer on each other’s properties to implement green practices, such as water harvesting cisterns and landscapes; membership is free. The remaining 30 will be available for sale to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the work performed by Watershed Management Group at the Ward III City Council Office. The site demonstrates simple methods available to local businesses to meet the city’s new rainwater harvesting standards, which will go into effect in June.
The mission of the Watershed Management Group is to improve rural and urban livelihoods by integrating community development and conservation. We provide local residents and community groups with the knowledge and skills necessary to sustainably manage their natural resources.
The Coca-Cola Enterprises environmental commitments are focused on the areas where we have the most significant and visible impacts -- water stewardship, sustainable packaging, and energy and climate protection. While our business cannot alter the forces of nature, we can work in partnership with others to play a role in protecting and preserving the planet for our generation and generations to come.
